Rollington Pop-Up Studio

This year we are proud to announce that the tent will be home to the:

PAW ARTIST OF THE DAY

Every day from eleven o’clock in the morning to half past three in the afternoon, a different artist will take up residence in the courtyard tent and will be demonstrating their skill in a variety of ways. You may find a song thrush being painted in watercolours, the ecoprinting of a velvet cushion, or the ancient art of lamp-working with glass. How about the carving of a piece of Portland limestone using only a hammer and chisel? There will also be displays of the artist’s work available to purchase, and may well be opportunities to try your hand and have a go yourself.

All of this may be enjoyed in the atmospheric Rollington Barn courtyard, bathed in (hopefully!) warm sunshine, whilst you tuck into a piece of delicious lemon sponge from the adjacent LoveCake cafe. What more could you possibly want!

So have a look through the artists below scheduled to appear in the Pop Up this year and plan your visit.

We look forward to welcoming you.

Daily from 11am to 3.30pm

PAW 2024 Pop-Up Studio Timetable:

Saturday 25 May
Rehan Zia | Visual Storyteller

Dr Rehan Zia will be providing insights into his photography practice as well as offering an opportunity to have your portraits taken. Drop by for an enchanted experience – You can see Dr Zia’s work at: www.rehanzia.net

Sunday 26 May
Cathy Seddon | Potter & Painter

I plan to make some mushroom mugs out of clay. I shall hand build them in the morning and then paint some previously bisque fired ones in the afternoon. Please do come and watch.

Monday 27 May
Roger Lockey | Painter

Sketch books have played an integral part in my artistic investigations for several decades and have formed the basis for many of my larger pieces of work. During my session in the studio I will be displaying some of my books illustrating the various approaches I use and the different themes I have explored. I will also be producing new work, answering any questions arising, as well as providing an opportunity for visitors to try their own sketching experiments.

Tuesday 28 May
The Burngate Stone Carving Centre

This year we are lucky to have the Burngate stone carvers in the PopUp. Using local Portland stone, they will be showing us how to carve a relief and remove the unwanted background material. It is not as easy as it looks! There may be an opportunity to have a go yourself.

Wednesday 29 May
Gillian Appleton | Glass Artist

Here is an opportunity to try glass fusing. Gillian at Bonfields Glass will help you make your very own sun-catcher. This is an activity for all the family. A range of precut glass, tools and safety equipment are provided. Your sun-catcher will be fired in my studio ready for collection or posted to you.

Thursday 30 May
Jonathan Easterbrooke | Potter

I shall be bringing my pottery wheel and demonstrating how you throw bowls, both large and small, the art of pulling handles and attaching them to mugs and an ancient Korean technique of ‘ throwing off the hump’ – which sounds rather mysterious and so you will just have to come along to find out what this involves! I shall be happy to discuss all things pottery, and for you to have a go yourself if you wish. Aprons will be provided!

Friday 31 May
Isabelle Gabay | Multi-Media Artist

We will be displaying and selling our main artworks, the mosaic stakes and the flower boards. For this occasion, I will be burning the lines of the flowers and will offer the opportunity to use the pyrography on a little project and have fun!

Saturday 1 June
Gail Boothman | Glass Artist

Gail from Galiani Glass will be demonstrating the ancient art of lampworking – making glass beads in an open flame! Come and watch and be mesmerised by the small exact work needed to create these miniature pieces of glass art that can then be made into Jewellery!

Sunday 2 June
Aline Johnson | Multi-Media Artist

Aline will be demonstrating Cyanotyping and Ecoprinting on velvet cushions, silk scarves and cotton napkins. The fabrics for Cyanotyping are pre coated in light sensitive chemicals that reacts to sunlight, so fingers crossed for some sunny days. You can have a go at creating your own sun printed napkin for a nominal price, tbc. Ecoprinting involves a process using leaves to be steamed onto the fabric. More of her work on display at the Dove House venue on the Grange Road, East Creech.

Monday 3  & Tuesday 4 June

Wednesday 5 June
Roy Aplin | Painter

Roy is a local wildlife artist who works with watercolours paints and who paints, amongst other things, the most exquisite pictures of our local birds. This he will be demonstrating in the tent so you can see how it is done. Not to be missed!

Thursday 6 June
Janine Drayson | Painter

Janine will be showing examples of her work as well as demonstrating the mindful art of drawing mandalas. Have a go if you wish and all materials will be provided.
