Artist’s Statement:
“These Portland stone carvings by Jonathon Sells, a tutor at the Burngate Purbeck Stone centre, are inspired by the Egyptian god Horus.
The Burngate Purbeck Stone Centre near Langton Matravers is a small charity that supports the sharing of skills and knowledge associated with Purbeck Stone. We teach stone carving for people of all ages and abilities, with courses in creative carving and sculpture, traditional masonry skills and lettercutting.
Our Purbeck Arts Weeks exhibition runs from Saturday 31 May to Saturday 7 June 10am – 4pm, featuring abstract and figurative sculpture, lettering arts, bird baths and bowls, created by our top-rated tutors and friends.Works are for sale. Exhibitors will carve onsite throughout and will be happy to answer your questions. There will also be courses running in our workshops suitable for families or individuals.
Discover the geology and history of the Purbeck landscape on one of our guided walks: ‘Quarry tracks’ – a 4km stroll around Acton on Weds 1 June, or our new 14km ‘Quarry to Castle Trail’ from Dancing Ledge to Corfe Castle on Saturday 31 May. Or create Purbeck inspired poetry with Sarah Acton on Sunday May 1st.
