Artist’s Statement:
“My work in this year’s PAW exhibition continues my exploration of textured surfaces, created by combining found objects and recycled materials with layers of oil or acrylic paint. The work includes things such as driftwood, metal strips from scaffolding boards, sawdust and plaster, which I have used to try to create a sense of weathering and erosion in the final pieces. Collecting items for the work can be a great source of inspiration, but can also result in my studio looking like an abandoned storehouse!
My chosen theme for the series is a collection of old terracotta pots from our garden shed, which I arranged into different compositions for a set of manipulated photos. With these, I emphasised the intensity of the colours in order to show up the weathered and lichen-covered surfaces. I also looked at work by artists such as Franz Marc, Andre Derain and Emily Carr for further reference. As part of the process, I have continued to used daily sketches to investigate ideas and processes, some of which are developed in the final pieces.”
