Scrolling

A Kinetic sculpture by Emma Browning

The sculpture is titled “Scrolling” to reflect the journey we have made from the tactile act of turning pages in books to the seamless scrolling of digital information today.

Audience participation is an integral aspect of this piece. So you are invited to physically engage with the sculpture by manually rotating the books on their axes. This interaction brings the pages to life, triggering a flickering, cascading motion that simulates the flow of information. The movement of the books reflects the boundless reach of knowledge today, where, in the age of AI and instantaneous digital access, information pours forth without limits.

I have drawn inspiration from the mechanics of automata toys, so I hope you find the design accessible and engaging. Do come and have a go!

You’ll find Scrolling in the installation space at the far end of the Byre.

Open daily 10am-5pm.
