Artist’s Statement:

“I’m a painter and ceramicist and I’m particularly interested in synaesthesia, where one sense activates another sense or senses. Most of my work is connected to this concept.
Some of my paintings are in response to poetry, especially those poets whose use of language reflects synaesthesia.
I’m very interested in smell, particularly perfume, and how smell stimulates the other senses. I collaborated with a perfume house to analyse their four signature perfumes in terms of their colour, form, texture, sound and, of course, their actual fragrance. I then produced paintings in response to these findings. I used the analysis, not so much as a strict brief, but as a creative springboard.
My paintings are generally oil on canvas although I do sometimes add mixed media for specific effects. My ceramics are painted with stains, underglazes and glazes and then fired to stoneware and therefore suitable inside or outside.”
